The Money Experiment

2013 Update

It’s the update everyone’s been waiting for: the 2013 found money tally (updated graph below). We set a new record this year, with a gigantic total of $446.69!! That brings the 2d’s found money total to $1,558 and some change. This year’s highlight find was $300 one day on my daily walking commute to work.

Until next year…happy money-finding to you!

Background (written in spring 2013)

This adventure started in 2006 with a super basic observation: there seemed to be a lot of pennies (and sometimes other change) on the ground when the 2d’s were out and about exploring their hometown of Toronto. They figured they had nothing to lose by picking up all the change they came across in a year, putting it in a jar, and tallying it up at the end of the year. Yes, the 2d’s are nerds, and dpr’s got a background in science, so this seemed like a no-brainer.

As demonstrated by the super-sophisticated bar graph (all those years of school really paid off for dpr here), the experiment has turned in to a longitudinal one with no end in sight (why stop a good thing?), and some highlights include:

  • biggest find: ~$175 on one of their many trips (yes, you read that right)
  • 2nd biggest find: a $100 bill
  • total found to date:$1,111 and change.
