Getting there: Air Canada to Hong Kong, train from Hung Hom Station in Hong Kong to Guangzhou East Train Station or Hong Kong MTR to Lo Wu station at Hong Kong/Shenzhen border and then a train to Guangzhou East Train Station.
Where d2 stays: The Sheraton Guangzhou in the Tianhe business district is d2’s second home when he’s in Guangzhou a few times a year for work. The good – free internet for Starwood members, good gym, newish hotel, close to subway, shopping and restaurants, service is good, Twitter/Facebook/Youtube work in the hotel!, down the road from the high end shopping mall, Taikoo, the bad – kinda pricey for China, but it is a Sheraton. d2 used to stay at the Grand International Hotel which is also in the Tianhe district, cheaper than the Sheraton, has an ok gym, good free internet, and friendly staff.
Fun: Guangzhou is the 3rd largest city in China, the Canton Tower is the tallest tower in China, there’s lots of good shopping – things the 2ds can’t get in North America like certain Nike goods and lots of other markets ;). It’s easy to make a layover shopping stop in Hong Kong either when you arrive or on your way back home – just stash your luggage in a locker at the Hung Hom train station and head out for some bargains!
Tips: Canadians need a visa to get in to China so make sure you get this before you leave home, get the hotel staff to write directions for you in Chinese since the cab drivers don’t speak English, subway system is in English and is easy and efficient.
